Tummy Tuck Candidates
The tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a popular cosmetic surgery procedure designed to remove excess fat and skin from around the waistline. Significant weight loss, natural aging, pregnancy, and heredity all play a role in the appearance of the abdomen, and many people find that this area does not respond well to diet or exercise. If you are concerned about the appearance of your midsection, a tummy tuck may be able to help you achieve a flatter and trimmer body contour.
Candidacy Overview
The ideal candidate for a tummy tuck is someone who is in good overall health and near his or her ideal weight, but who struggles with excess fat and skin in the abdominal area. Smoking and/or serious health issues may disqualify potential patients from undergoing the tummy tuck procedure. Additionally, although abdominoplasty patients are usually 30 or older, this procedure can be performed on anyone over 18. Candidates must be mentally and emotionally stable with realistic expectations about the outcome they can expect with abdominoplasty.
The tummy tuck is usually recommended for patients who have both excess skin and excess fat with a protruding belly and weak abdominal muscles. The procedure is sometimes combined with liposuction for improved body contouring results.
Mommy Makeover
Many women are left with hanging skin and loose muscles in the abdominal region following childbirth, and are unable to achieve a toned appearance even after exercise and weight loss. A tummy tuck is often incorporated into “mommy makeover” procedures designed to help women get back to their pre-baby bodies following pregnancy and childbirth. Mommy makeover procedures also frequently include breast lift or other breast enhancement procedures. However, you should postpone having a tummy tuck or other mommy makeover surgery until you are finished having children.
